Four Cylinder Club of America History Project

This photograph appeared in the New Haven Sunday Herald, June 15, 1952.  The accompanying article was headlined “Four Cylinder Club Combats Hot-Rodders”.  Quite an inflammatory headline for an era when sports car enthusiasts were philosophically poles apart from their hot rod brethren.  They certainly look the part of the stereotypical sports car enthusiast, with their plaid English style caps!  Notice the sign on signs on the Volkswagen micro-bus.  The one in the windshield reads “PEOPLE’S WAGEN” while the copy below the windshield reads ‘REAR ENGINE AND AIR COOLED VOLKSWAGEN”  Foreign car enthusiasts of the day had their work cut out for them, educating the public about the unique cars from across the Atlantic!

Very interesting, Michael. Was your dad a member of the Four Cylinder Club of America?
