Scotchman’s Lag Rally – August 26, 1951
It appears the the Scotchman’s Lag Rally was the FCCA’s first economy run. Held with the support of the Mobil Oil (General Petroleum) Company, the rally covered a distance of 101-miles from Glendale to Wrightwood. The article appeared in a local Wrightwood newspaper. I still have vivid memories of rolling around in the back seat of my dad’s Austin A40 Devon on economy runs. One of the images burned onto my mind permanently is one of small cars lined up at a Mobil station to have their gas tanks filled to the brim and then sealed. This article includes a picture of just such a scene! Articles like this, hidden away in basements and attics are the keys to learning about the events of the day. In fact, the photos accompanying this article gave me the key to identifying some of the photos donated to the FCCA archive by Bruce Carnachan.
